Not quite what we expected but nonetheless a most enjoyable and entertaining experience. Briottieres is a truly magnificent old 18th century family home set in rolling acres of rural countryside. Host Francois de Valbray greeting on arrival in a warm ebullient manner makes it clear from the start this is no ordinary hotel! No, it is first and foremost a family home which welcomes paying guests who essentially look after themselves. A large part of the Chateau is open to guests to enjoy and relax in adorned and furnished as it is in luxurious old comfortable antique and modern style.
Relax we did, an honesty system means you can enjoy refreshments at any time by helping yourself to both soft and alcoholic drinks and recording your consumption in an "honesty" book provided which is then recorded on your account. This system operated in your room, in the main lounge and at the swimming pool.
Dinner can be ordered in advance and is served in a rather grand dining room, Francois, who very obviously enjoys meeting and greeting his guests is on hand to help and advise on his wine list which on which he demonstrates an intimate knowledge, which makes a pleasant change in this day and age. Local Anjou excellent wines feature strongly in his repitoire.
Mine hostess, Hedwige, is the chef, who demonstrates a delicate touch in her menu's, there is "no choice" the menu is set for the day so guests get what Francois gets! We enjoyed two evening meals and found the system most acceptable, finished with drinks on the terrace as the sun set peacefully on the hoizon, relaxing and listening to the silence.
Want to get away from it all? Chateau Briottieres is definitely "in a class of it's own"
